Rocket Ships
Skills:
Physical: Kicking, core stability, rhythm
Cognitive: Sequencing, listening to cues
Social: Group play, turn-taking
Number of participants:
3 or more
Equipment:
Optional use of pool floor markers/floating objects
Description:
Rocket ships adds an element of fun to learning how to push and glide. Swimmers begin on the wall and push off trying to glide as far as possible when they hear ‘blast off’. As they progress, add in a leg and arm movement before turning back to the wall to go again.
Wheelchair friendly?
Yes
Adaptations for Wheelchair Users:
- Dryland seated “rocket kicks” using resistance band for forward propulsion simulation
- Seated forward scooting or timed reaction movement on “Ignition” and “Blast Off”
- Supported vertical kicking in water with instructor assistance
- Shortened distances with visual floor markers for clear targets
Modifications to make the activity easier:
Change the equipment:
- Use shallow water where swimmers can touch the bottom
- Use a pool noodle or kickboard for added buoyancy and balance
Change the task:
- Practice short distances first
- Break commands into simple steps
- Allow rest between each “launch”
Modifications to make the activity harder:
Change the equipment:
- Move to deeper water
- Increase travel distance
Change the task:
- Add time challenge (reach 10m quickly)
- Require streamlined arms overhead
Goal examples:
- I will kick all the way to the marker without stopping.
- I will keep my body straight like a rocket while I kick.
