Circle Rush Hour
Skills:
Physical: Kicking endurance, propulsion, coordination
Cognitive: Spatial awareness, reaction time
Social: Cooperative play
Number of participants:
4 or more
Equipment:
none
Description:
Swimmers form a loose circle in the water. On “Go,” everyone begins kicking in place or moving slowly around the circle. When the instructor calls “Rush Hour,” swimmers move quickly to a new position in the circle without colliding, practicing controlled kicks, quick changes in direction, and sustained motion.
Wheelchair friendly?
Yes
Adaptations for Wheelchair Users:
- Dryland seated kicking using resistance band or simulated flutter kicks
- Seated “reaction circle” using upper-body movements to simulate repositioning on cue
- Supported vertical kicking in water with instructor assistance
Modifications to make the activity easier:
Change the equipment:
- Use shallow water where swimmers can stand
- Allow holding the wall or a pool noodle for balance
Change the task:
- Slow continuous kicking in place instead of moving around the circle
- Reduce round duration to 10–15 seconds
Modifications to make the activity harder:
Change the equipment:
- Move to deeper water where swimmers cannot touch the bottom
- Increase circle size to require more propulsion
Change the task:
- Add timed “Rush Hour” bursts (20–30 seconds fast kick)
- Require rapid direction changes before repositioning
Goal examples:
- I will move to a new spot in the circle when I hear “Rush Hour” without bumping into anyone.
- I will keep my legs straight while I kick for one full round.
