Skills:

Physical: kicking a ball, lower limb coordination, balance

Cognitive: visual processing, selective attention

Social: taking turns

Number of participants:

5 or more

Equipment:

  • soccer ball
  • pieces of paper with numbers as targets to stick to the wall/put in the net

Description:

  1. children kick at different targets on the wall
  2. each target is worth a different number of points
  3. groups are given 10 kicks as a team to kick at the target and keep track of how many points they earn as a team

Wheelchair friendly?

Yes, children using wheelchairs can throw the ball or “kick” the ball with a hockey stick

Modifications to make the activity easier:

Change the equipment:

  • use a larger, lighter ball (i.e., beach ball) to decrease physical and cognitive demand
  • make the targets larger to decrease physical and cognitive demand

Change the environment: have the child place stand closer to the target to decrease physical and cognitive demand

Modifications to make the activity harder:

Change the equipment: make the targets smaller to increase physical and cognitive demand

Change the environment: have the child on a bigger team to increase social demand

Goal examples:

  • I will be able to accurately kick the ball to hit a target 3 out of 5 times, from a distance of 5m away
  • I can kick the ball and hit a target
