Shuttle Relay

Skills:

Physical: gross motor skill, coordination

Cognitive: sustained attention, selective attention, visual processing

Social: turn taking, teamwork

Number of participants:

3 or more

Equipment:

  • 1 (or more) batons/item(s) for children to pass
  • optional: 2 (or more) cones to mark where children are to stand

Description:

  1. children are divided into teams of 3
  2. in each group, two children stand at one line (one behind the other), one stands on an opposite line
  3. the child at the front of the line (in the pair) is holding the relay baton and runs to the child standing on the opposite line on a signal and passes the baton
  4. the child standing on the opposite line then runs back to where the first child came from and passes the baton to the next person

Adaptations for Wheelchair Users:

Children who are using wheelchairs can practice wheeling with the baton in their lap.

Children with extreme spasticity in their hands may have difficulty with the baton. Have these children use a high five to tag off their teammate

Modifications to make the activity easier:

Change the environment: decrease the distance between the lines that children are required to run to/from to decrease physical demand

Change the equipment: have the child give/receive a high five instead of the baton to decrease physical demand

Change the task: cue child on when they should start running to decrease cognitive demand

Modifications to make the activity harder:

Change the environment: increase the distance between the lines that children are required to run to/from to increase physical demand

Change the task: have the child walk faster/run or hop on one (or two) feet to increase physical demand

Goal examples:

  • at the end of the program, the child will be able to run the relay 2 times with no more than 2 cues
  • I can run to my friend and pass them the baton

Activity adapted from video above.
