Skills:
Physical: gross motor skill, coordination
Cognitive: sustained attention, selective attention, visual processing
Social: turn taking, teamwork
Number of participants:
3 or more
Equipment:
- 1 (or more) batons/item(s) for children to pass
- optional: 2 (or more) cones to mark where children are to stand
Description:
- children are divided into teams of 3
- in each group, two children stand at one line (one behind the other), one stands on an opposite line
- the child at the front of the line (in the pair) is holding the relay baton and runs to the child standing on the opposite line on a signal and passes the baton
- the child standing on the opposite line then runs back to where the first child came from and passes the baton to the next person
Adaptations for Wheelchair Users:
Modifications to make the activity easier:
Change the environment: decrease the distance between the lines that children are required to run to/from to decrease physical demand
Change the equipment: have the child give/receive a high five instead of the baton to decrease physical demand
Change the task: cue child on when they should start running to decrease cognitive demand
Modifications to make the activity harder:
Change the environment: increase the distance between the lines that children are required to run to/from to increase physical demand
Change the task: have the child walk faster/run or hop on one (or two) feet to increase physical demand
Goal examples:
- at the end of the program, the child will be able to run the relay 2 times with no more than 2 cues
- I can run to my friend and pass them the baton
