Equipment:
one hula hoop and one ball per pair
Description:
- place a hula hoop between two children standing about 5m apart
- one child drops the ball and strikes it with their hand, aiming at the hoop
- after 5 tries, the other partner takes a turn
Adaptations for Wheelchair Users:
Children in wheelchairs can participate in this activity by striking the ball with hand while in their wheelchair.
Modifications to make the activity easier:
Change the equipment:
- use a larger ball to decrease physical and cognitive demand
- use a larger hoop as a target for the child to decrease physical and cognitive demand
Change the task: have the child strike the ball into the hoop from a closer distance to decrease physical and social demand
Modifications to make the activity harder:
Change the equipment:
- give the child a bat or stick to strike the ball with to increase physical demand
- use a smaller hoop as the target for the child to increase physical and cognitive demand
Change the task: have the child wait for their partner to strike the ball 7 times to increase social demand
Goal examples:
- the child is able to strike the ball into the hoop when it is their turn, 3 out of 5 times
- I can take turns with my friends.
