Call Ball

Skills:

Physical: rolling a ball along the ground, catching, upper limb coordination, hand-eye coordination, catching a ball

3 or more

Equipment:

1 medium-sized ball

Description:

  1. groups form circles around the gym with one person in the middle holding the ball
  2. the middle person tosses the ball high in the air and calls out the name of another person in the circle
  3. this child must catch the ball after no more than one bounce before becoming the middle person

Modifications to make the activity easier:

Change the environment: have a smaller space for children to throw and catch the ball in to decrease physical demand

Change the equipment: use a larger, lighter ball to decrease physical demand

Modifications to make the activity harder:

Change the environment: have the middle child throw the ball away from the person who’s name they call to increase physical demand

Change the equipment: use a medicine ball to increase physical demand

Goal examples:

  • the child will be able to catch the ball after only one bounce for 4 out of 5 turns
  • I can throw a ball to my friend
